Description

On one rainy night, safe in the Great Valley, a certain blue flyer watched as the rain poured hard on the landscape. Devon sighed, as he hoped and prayed that his beloved father would be okay. The last few weeks have been hard on them both, as Pterano came down with a sickness that very few dinosaurs survive. He couldn't believe that its been seventeen years. Seventeen years since they first met, twelve years ago that they became father and son. He couldn't believe at how far he and Pterano have gotten since then. They first started as acquaintences, friends, best friends, and finally, father and son. And it has changed Devon's life, as if some miracle had happened.

He remembered when his biological father, the one who he doesn't even consider a father anymore, had killed his girlfriend and he thought he'd never find anyone like her. But then he met Meg, who quickly became the new girl of his dreams. Eventually they ended up marrying and had a couple of daughters, with a son that have yet to hatch. Yeah, he started a new family, but there was absolutely NO way that he could have done it without Pterano by his side. He literally felt as if he couldn't have done ANYTHING without Pterano by his side.

Even though he has started a family of his own, and found his own cave to raise his family in, Devon felt like he could never live up to his father. Ever. Even after Pterano had told him many times that he already has. He absolutely loved Pterano with all of his heart, more than his own life, his own soul, more than anything in general. Pterano was his first and greatest love and it hurt him so much that there was a high chance that Pterano could be gone forever from his life.

"Devon?"

That raspy British accent of his father snapped him out of his thoughts. He immediately rushed to his side. "Hey Dad." he said, smiling softly down at him.

"Devon...I need you to promise me one last thing." Pterano requested, coughing a little.

Devon winced, as he didn't like the sound of that at all. "One last thing" those words from Pterano sent a few tears to his eyes, but he wiped them away. "Anything, Dad."

"Promise me...that you'll let me go." Pterano coughed again.

"No...no. Pterano, don't say that! I could never let you go." Devon pleaded, taking his hand to emphasize his point.

"Devon, I'll only hold you back if you don't."

"No. Dad, stop saying that! You've been MORE than a blessing to me. You've helped me through thick and thin! How could I let you go!?"

"Devon...listen to me. You have to let go, I know it's tough. Believe me, I know." Pterano gripped his hand a little tighter. "But you have your whole life ahead of you. You have a beautiful wife and such amazing children that I'm proud to call my own grandchildren."

"And I also have you! I couldn't have had my family without you! I just couldn't! I would've still ended up like Sierra if it wasn't for you!"

"Devon, I didn't find you a mate and got you children. You did. I only got in the way."

"Dad, that's not true! That's NOT true! You have to give yourself credit sometime!" Devon protested, tears spilling out of his eyes now.

"And so do you, Devon. I'm not the one who magically created her for you. You are the one who found her, and won her heart. And I couldn't be even more proud of you for it." Pterano rubbed Devon's hand gently, and the blue flyer only sighed in response, looking down. "Devon, look at me." The blue flyer obeyed and gazed directly into Pterano's dying eyes. "If you can't let me go, then do this. I want you to live a full, happy, stress free life. Go have adventures, fly around the world. Fight off sharpteeth, anything that'll make your life long and interesting. Don't let my death stop you from that."

"That's easier said than done. My life would be miserable if it weren't for you. I'm nothing without you, Dad."

"Devon, that is not true. You are my son and the most amazing son I would ever ask for in my life." Pterano told him, giving him a serious look to indicate that he meant what he was saying. "Just please promise me this."

Devon shifted his look to the ground and Pterano's eyes twice before he sighed. "I...I promise."

"Good. Now let me see that beautiful smile of yours." Pterano smiled now, rubbing his hand once again.

"I'm not sure if I can do that with you dying, Dad." Devon let a few more tears run down his cheeks.

"Well think of the memories we've shared. How about the time when we knocked down that sharptooth?"

Devon let out a chuckle through his tears. "Yeah those were the days weren't they?"

"Yes, that's my boy." The red flyer reached up and touched his son's cheek for the last time and Devon immediately rubbed his cheek against Pterano's hand, wiping away some of the flowing tears. "I love you, Devon. You have no idea what it has been like before I met you. I was miserable, and I didn't know the right path. But then you came along and turned such a crusty old lump of coal like me into a diamond. You make me proud to be your father everyday and you've never failed to make me smile. You've always made me feel like I was young again, and you still do. You have no idea just how happy I was when you called me Dad for the first time." At this point, Pterano couldn't hold his arm up any longer and his hand ended up slipping back into Devon's hand. Also, Devon noticed that Pterano's voice was growing weaker and weaker, indicating that his time was very near. His smile turned back into a frown. "Oh Devon...my sweet, sweet baby boy. I love you, Devon."

Devon closed his eyes and as soon as he did, he felt Pterano's hand loosen and slip onto the floor. He heard a quiet sigh coming from the dying flyer, and things went silent. He opened his eyes again to see his beloved father laying there; body limp, eyes closed, skin already growing cold. And this meant only one thing.

Realization washed over the sad young flyer and he gasped and his eye went wide. "No!" he exclaimed as more tears poured down his cheeks. "Dad...Dad?" by now his voice was cracking. "DAAAAAD!!!!!!" He lost it. He completely lost it. He clung to the red flyer tightly, sobbing, bawling, wailing hard into Pterano's dorment chest. He wailed so loud, that his crying seemed to echo throughout the valley. He kissed him, pounded on his chest, anything that would bring his beloved father back. But it all proved to be worthless. Pterano was dead, and there was nothing he could do about it.

Pteranodon dying is sad. How will Petrie react when he hears the news of his uncle's death.
